Goderich's Gairbraid Theatre Comapny

Goderich’s Gairbraid Theatre Company is a young company, both in terms of history and experience of the young acting company but there’s lots of ambition with a season that opens June 16 and continues until August 25, featuring both newly-created local works and international classics.
An example of the former is a collective work Last Man Hanged, a collective work inspired by the writings of John Melady.
A dozen years before the Black Donnellys were butchered at Lucan, Ontario, another murderous rampage took place a few miles away. On June 6, 1868, three men robbed and killed a rich farmer, his wife, and her unborn child. They concocted an alibi, stuck to it, and almost got off. In fact, two of them did.
The third, Nicholas Melady, went to prison and fell in love with a beautiful woman in a nearby cell. There to entrap him, she listened, learned, and led him to the gallows. When he was hanged in Goderich, hundreds watched, but thousands were late for the spectacle. They were bitterly disappointed because they had missed the last public hanging in Canada.
The season continues with Ring 'Round The Moon by Jean Anouilh, Europe's most popular post-World War II playwright. This off-Broadway revival has everything in place for a fairytale full of lovers who won’t live happily ever after until a summer charade propels them across a complicated trail of mixups and misunderstandings. Fundamentally about the power of money and the relationships forged and broken in the name of love, or lack of it, this romantic comedy challenges the audience into guessing who will pop up next (and from where) at an all-night party.
Wm. Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet is the classical entry in the season. It’s the familiar story of two teenagers who pursue their love for each other despite the fact their families have been at odds for decades. Romeo, a Montague, and Juliet, a Capulet, fall in love and are married in secret.  But the world will not leave them alone.
Gairbraid is bringing back its first-year hit with the Pillar to Port Walkabout, a moving piece of theatre — literally. Actors and musicians bring 19th century Goderich to life with nature and architecture as their stage. From Victorian homes to rugged bluffs, streetscapes to manses, this easy-paced walkabout has something for everyone and is a must for all those wishing to experience Goderich and theatre at its natural best.
